JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – 11th ranked Carson-Newman women's soccer will kick off South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 13 when they travel to Mars Hill to take on the Lions. Mars Hill (1-2-1) was selected to finish last in the 2017 preseason poll.
Tomorrow afternoon will mark the first game for C-N in seven days after Francis Marion was forced to abandon its game at Mossy Creek due to the threat of Hurricane Irma.
"It was very disappointing not to play the game and lose out on a home match, but we were able to get the girls together for an intersquad game," explained Coach Simon Duffy. "It wasn't all wasted, now we're getting ready for the trip to Mars Hill and hopefully we're ready to compete."
The Lions are led by senior midfielder Breona Tate who was named to SAC Preseason First Team All-Conference.
The Eagles ride a nine-game winning streak over Mars Hill and a 24-2-1 record overall dating back to 1992.
"We've had a road game, but it's just always different on the road when it's a conference game," added Duffy. "It will be a tough fixture, and we need to be mindful of who we are and hopefully we can put a performance in tomorrow because they'll be gunning for us."
C-N starts its 2017 season 3-0 for the fourth time in program history, outscoring their opponents 11-1. Out of the 11 goals scored, 10 have come in the final 45 minutes.
"Our talent and fitness in the end is showing, but it's still something we can improve on even though we are winning," expressed Duffy.
Kick off tomorrow is slated for a 5:00 p.m. start.
