United Soccer Coaches All-Region Release

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Five Carson-Newman players have been named to the 2017 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Women's All-Southeast Region Teams which is the most of any school named, as announced this evening.

Three of the five have been named first-team All-Region which also marks the most of any school.

Since the program started in 1991, five players on USC all-region teams are the most C-N has had in history, having collected four in the 2009 season.

Senior forward Lauren Wade and defender Helen Seed claimed first-team honors after they were named to the Division II Conference Commissioners Association First-Team All-Southeast Region on Nov. 15.

Wade, who was named D2CCA Southeast Region Player of the Year, has a team-high 17 goals and 13 assists so far in 2017. She's been named first-team all-region for the second-straight season and is tied for the program lead for most game-winning goals in a season with seven.

Seed continues a stellar campaign defensively providing the Eagles with one of the best defenses in the nation. The Preston, England native also has chipped in offensively coming up with a career-high four goals this season.

C-N goalkeeper Jackie Burns, who was a second-team member for D2CCA all-region, made the leap to earn USC first-team honors for the first time in her career. UNC-Pembroke goalkeeper Gina Ryan was awarded first-team honors over Burns in the D2CCA all-region release.

The sophomore Burns is the all-time winningest goalkeeper in women's soccer history at Carson-Newman and holds the title for the most career shutouts with 25.3. She has 11 solo shutouts this season, splitting three others with teammate Jasmine Rizk.

"It's pretty amazing. It shows what I'm capable of compared to other goalkeepers and there are a lot of other high standards out there," Burns said.

Junior defender Averi Williams was awarded second-team All-Southeast Region honors, the first USC award in her career. She too, was named second-team D2CCA all-region a couple weeks ago.

Williams (Powell, Tenn.) also headlines a stellar Eagles defense who has 14 clean sheets. She also has assisted on seven goals in 2017.

Junior Holly Talbut-Smith rounds out the C-N players named to USC All-Southeast Region teams with a third-team appearance, marking the her first USC appearance of her career.

The native of Crawley, England is third on the team in total points with 21, collecting six goals and nine assists.

"We have a really strong squad both attack and defense," Burns mentioned. "We have a consistency and a variety of talented players here and it shows with the all-region selections."
