Game Notes v. Lincoln Memorial
Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week Release
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The 9th-ranked Carson-Newman women's soccer team returns to McCown Field when they host Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday, Oct. 4 after a two-game road trip.
The Eagles come off a 2-0 week in wins over Clayton State and South Atlantic Conference foe Anderson, outscoring their opponents 5-1 and outshooting the team's 38-9.
Senior forward Lauren Wade was credited with an assist on each Carson-Newman goal on the week, tallying a total of eight for the season which is first in the league and first in all of D2 soccer. Her 18 points total in nine games ranks 21st in the nation.
The native of Coleraine, Northern Ireland earned player of the week honors from the Tennessee Sports Writers Association as announced this morning. Wade joins teammate Magda Mosengo as a 2017 player of the week selection by the TSWA.
"Her professionalism and work ethic are outstanding," exclaimed Coach Simon Duffy. "Everyone knows her as a great player but she's a great person. There are some bright things in her future to come, and the scary thing is she hasn't even hit full stride yet. I know her best is yet to come."
"I didn't even realize what I did until seeing the tweets about it," said Wade. "Teammates have been in good positions, I'll always try and score myself but being aware of where my teammates are, I'll make sure they score the goal."
C-N puts their unbeaten streak of nine games on the line Wednesday afternoon whereas the Railsplitters are still in search of their first conference win in 2017 under first-year head coach Sean Fraser.
"It doesn't matter what these teams records are at this point," explained Duffy. "They'll come in here with a point to prove, and we'll need to make sure that won't happen. We have to focus on doing what we do."
Fraser arrived to Harrogate, Tenn. in January of 2017 after a one-year stint as the assistant men's soccer coach at the University of Charleston. He helped guide the Golden Eagles to a 19-3-2 record and an appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship game, ultimately getting knocked off by the Wingate Bulldogs.
Lincoln Memorial (5-5, 0-4 SAC) is led by junior forward Caroline Souza who has notched three goals and one assist, in just eight games. No LMU player cracked the preseason first or second-team all-league, however, Souza received honorable mention all-conference following the 2016 campaign.
"It'll be a tough task for us," mentioned Wade. "LMU has a good side, but we've trained hard this week and can't wait to get back out there. We have to be focused moving forward."
The Eagles (8-0-1, 4-0-1 SAC) will carry the top three point leaders in the conference into the game with Wade leading at 18, Holly Talbut-Smith second with 15, and Mosengo third with 12.
The team leads the league in goals scored with 29, while conceding only seven goals which is good for second-best.
Carson-Newman will also carry its consecutive unbeaten streak at home into the meeting with the Railsplitters as they look to extend it to 19 games. The Eagles have not lost at McCown Field since September of 2015 when they fell to Ohio Dominican and have only trailed for a total of 24 minutes out of a possible 1837 in that stretch.
