JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The 9th-ranked Carson-Newman women's soccer team extended their home-unbeaten streak to 19 games in the 5-2 victory over Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday evening.
A wild second half brought forth four yellow cards, one red card, and five goals from both of the teams.
"Very strange game to be honest," chuckled Coach Simon Duffy. "It was just a matter of time for us. Very happy with our resiliency in the second half and we hardly let them touch the ball. LMU hasn't gotten a win in the conference but they did not look like a team who hasn't gotten one."
Senior Melissa Carpenter, who notched a goal for the Railsplitters (5-6, 0-5 SAC) to even the game at one in the 41st minute, was given a red card in the 48th minute after slapping junior Averi Williams after a dead ball. Williams subsequently received a yellow card after being restrained by teammates preventing the defender from retaliating.
With the Eagles (9-0-1, 5-0-1 SAC) playing up a player for the final 42 minutes of play, the C-N advantage paid off as Emilee Futrell opened the floodgates in the 67th minute when Magda Mosengo kicked the ball over her head and high into the air, finding the head of the freshman who outleaped Railsplitter defenders for her third goal of the season.
Reigning TSWA Player of the Week Lauren Wade, widened the gap in the 71st minute after a lead pass from Lara Hallgrimsdottir put the ball on the left-footed senior who drilled her sixth goal of the year for her conference leading 20th point.
It only took 19 seconds for LMU to respond after a defensive miscue gave Courtney Boyd her second goal of the season to close the gap 3-2.
Futrell, a native of Wilson, N.C., wasted no time getting the goal back when she took another feed from the junior Mosengo, chipping home her second tally of the contest just over a minute later. Alex Brandan was also credited with an assist on the play marking her fourth of the season.
"It was extremely important to get a win at home," explained Futrell. "We struggled last Wednesday, so it felt good really good to play well in today's midweek game."
Mosengo sealed the victory in the 87th minute off the teams 11th and final corner from Hallgrimstoddir. The sophomore midfielder found Mosengo in the middle of the box, who settled the ball and the rest, was history. It would be her sixth goal of the year, and Hallgrimsdottir's 5th helper of the campaign.
The Eagles outshot the Railsplitters 19-5 on the evening with one in particular being one of the more impressive goals you'll see all season.
Hallgrimstottir, a native of Kopavogur, Iceland, lined up for a corner kick in the 21st minute. An impressive strike on the ball allowed it to sail and curve into the right side of the net untouched for her third goal in 2017.

"When you put a delivery in like that, there's always a chance it can go in," added Duffy. "It sailed in and it was a great finish."
Brooke Taylor ended the day with four saves including a stop on a penalty kick to prevent the Eagles from taking a 2-0 in the 38th minute. Jackie Burns stopped three shots for her ninth victory.
Carson-Newman will hit the road again this weekend when they travel to Catawba to take on the Catawba College Catawba Indians. Game time on Saturday, Oct. 7 is set for a 5:00 p.m. start.
