Eagles take on no. 2 Wingate in first conference match

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (0-1-1) face off against Wingate (1-0-2) on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m.

Wingate was voted no. 2 in the 2013 SAC coaches' preseason poll. Forward Jade Montgomery was named to the All-SAC first team in the preseason poll while teammates Taryn Grivois, a midfielder, and Chelsey Horan, a defender, made second team.

Last season, the Bulldogs beat the Eagles 3-0. C-N was outshot 12-5 and Montgomery scored all three goals for Wingate.

The Eagles lost 3-2 against in their last game against Trevecca on Sept. 11. They went down by three in the first half. Seniors Sam Thomsit (Trowbridge, England) got the first goal midway through the second half from a penalty kick after freshman Lauren Morelock (Abingdon, Va.) was fouled in the box. Danna Stringle (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) put up the second point for C-N. She received a pass from Sidnee Edwards (Knoxville, Tenn.), beat a defender and nailed a shot past the goalkeeper into the right side of the net.

After the women's game before the men kick off, there will be skydivers landing on the pitch from Skydive East Tennessee. If at least 1,000 fans come out to support the Eagles this Saturday, President Randall O'Brien has agreed to jump from a plane within a week of the matches.
