Carson-Newman takes on Catawba on the road

SALISBURY, N.C. – Carson-Newman (0-2-1, 0-1 SAC) hits the trail to Catawba (2-2-1, 0-0-1 SAC) for its second conference match of the season on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Eagles took on Wingate last Saturday and dropped the match 4-1. Lizeth Munguia (Wilmington, N.C.) scored the lone goal for the Eagles in the 85th minute off a cross from Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.).

"We've been a bit absent on the field going forward," Carson-Newman head coach Richard Moodie said. "But playing out of the back through the midfield we look extremely comfortable. We just struggle in the final third."

Wingate outshot the Eagles 15 to 7. Jade Montgomery scored two goals for the Bulldogs while Brooke Howell and Kaitlyn Brunsworth got the other two points.

"Regardless of the score," Moodie said, "I think my team came off the field fighting."

On Sept. 14, Catawba tied Anderson 2-2 in its first conference match. Emily Auwarter led the Indians in shots with six taken, three on net and a goal. Juliana Conte took three shots, had two on goal and put up the second point for her team. Mary Kirkman had five shots with four on frame. Sophie Waller assisted both goals for Catawba.

Last year, Catawba beat Carson-Newman 2-1. Danna Stringle (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) led the Eagles in shots with three taken, two on net and a penalty kick goal. Sophie Waller and Karen Presnell each had an unassisted goal for the Indians. Catawba outshot Carson-Newman 19 to 11.

"Realistically, we're set up to compete very well in the conference this year," Moodie said.
