Eagles drop heartbreaker to Newberry in overtime

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (3-5-2, 2-3-1 SAC) fell in double overtime 1-0 to conference foe Newberry (7-4, 5-2 SAC) Saturday evening.

"It was a tough loss," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said, "but this time last year we got hammered by that team. It's good to see us competing with some of these teams now."

The Wolves outshot the Eagles 18 to 15. Tiarna McKenna (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) had seven saves on the match, including a breakaway in the first half.

"We're finding it tough to just get the extra mile done," Moodie said. "They looked tired and sluggish from the overtime win against LMU on Wednesday."

The lone goal came in the 102nd minute of action when Sarah Sager capitalized on a rebounded blocked cross. Sager had five shots in the match and landed three on target.

Breanna Naranjo led Newberry in shots having taken five, four of which were on net.

Freshman Gabrielle Gianeselli (Knoxville, Tenn.) leads the Eagles in points with nine while Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) follows closely behind with eight.

"Milligan is an exciting match up for us," Moodie said. "It gives us a little break from the conference matches we have remaining."
