Eagles fell in first round to top seeded Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, NC – Carson-Newman (6-7-4, 4-4-3 SAC) dropped its conference tournament quarterfinal match to no. 1 seed Lenoir-Rhyne (13-3-1, 9-1-1 SAC) 5-1 Tuesday night.

 

Senior Danna Stringle (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) opened the scoring in the second minute to take a one goal lead over the Bears. She picked off a faulty clear by L-R and lobbed the ball in over the keeper's head.

 

Kendall Smith tallied three goals and an assist in the match giving her seven goals on the season. Her goals came in the 12th, 36th and 51st minutes; her second goal constitutes the game winner.

 

Lauren Donovan and Leah Mullins each supplied a goal while Ariel Dominguez and Jessica Lintz each had an assist.

 

In the 41st minute, senior Raquel Pimentel (New Port Richey, Fla.) and Garcelle Alequine were each issued a red card and both teams played a man down.

 

The Bears outshot the Eagles 27 to seven. Senior captain Tiarna McKenna (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) made eight saves during the match. She is ranked seventh in the conference with 75 saves.

 

Stringle led the Eagles in shots having taken three, one of which was on frame.

 

"It was a terrible way to go out," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said. "We would just like to thank our seniors for their years of dedication and hard work, and the university, athletic director and fans for their support."
