SALISBURY, N.C. – Carson-Newman (1-2-1, 1-1 SAC) picked up its first win of the season and of conference play against Catawba (2-3-1, 0-1-1 SAC) on Saturday afternoon.

Sophie Waller put Catawba on the board 27 minutes into the match. Alex Twombly had the assist.

In the 44th minute, Junior captain Sidnee Edwards (Knoxville, Tenn.) scored for the Eagles to tie it up with a first-time volleyed finish off a flawless cross by Susann Kneifel (Schkeuditz, Germany).

"We found ourselves 1 nil down," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said. "Sid got a fantastic goal to send us into the break 1-1."

Edwards put another point on the board for the Eagles assisted by senior Danna Stringle (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) in the 57th minute. Ten minutes later, Stringle also assisted the third goal by freshman Gabby Gianeselli (Knoxville, Tenn.) to enhance the Eagles to a 3-1 lead that was maintained the remainder of the match.

"It was a great team performance," Moodie said. "I thought we were the better team."

Both Edwards and Gianeselli took two shots and landed them both on net. The Eagles had five shots, all of which were on net. Catawba outshot Carson-Newman 22 to 5.

Senior captain Tiarna McKenna (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) played the entire 90 minutes and had 10 saves.

"I'm very proud," Moodie said. "They worked hard, scored lots of goals and looked good as a team."

The Eagles continue their season on the road at King on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
