Conference rivalry ensues for C-N women’s soccer at Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (6-5-3, 4-3-2 SAC) heads to Tusculum (7-6-3, 5-2-2 SAC) for its breast cancer awareness match and a 5 p.m. kickoff.

"This is a must win for the girls," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said. "They have had a bit of a rough year in the conference as well."

The Eagles are coming off a big 1-0 win over Queens, no. 10 in the region, last Saturday. Senior Danna Stringle (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) scored the lone goal off a penalty kick in the 34th minute.

Senior captain Tiarna McKenna (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) tallied eight saves on the match. McKenna has totaled 60 saves on the year ranking her at sixth in the conference. She is fourth in the conference in saves per game and eighth with a save percentage of .779.

"It'll be a bit of a scrap against Tusculum," Moodie said. "But we have to be confident coming off a big win."

Nationally, Carson-Newman is ranked 47th of 199 in saves as a team.

On Sept. 18, the Pioneers tied Queens 0-0 after two overtimes.

Tusculum beat Coker 1-0 on Saturday. Carly Whitman scored her first goal of the season in the 55th minute to claim the win for the Pioneers.

On Oct. 19, C-N tied Coker 0-0 after two overtime periods. McKenna totaled another eight saves while Stringle led the Eagles in shots having taken five, four of which were on target.

Last year, the Pioneers defeated the Eagles 3-2. Tusculum went up 3-0 by the 70th minute with goals from Jana Linke, Tramicka James, and Taylor Lewis.

"We contested well last year," Moodie said. "Despite their 3-2 victory, we competed with them."

In the 79th minute, Stringle scored a penalty kick to make it 3-2. Five minutes later, Maleya Garrison (Hendersonville, Tenn.) sent in a shot from 20 yards outside the box that sailed in over the keepers.

Stringle leads the Eagles in shots with 42 landing her at 10th in the SAC.

Freshman Gabrielle Gianeselli leads C-N with 11 points tying her for 15th in the conference.

"It'll be a tough game," Moodie said. "The better team is going to win."
