Spring shows promise for Lady Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman women's soccer team found success working as a team to finish out their spring season 2-4-1.

After graduating seven seniors, the Eagles were low in numbers and faced the adversities that come with.

"As a team," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said, "we had to play various players out of their natural positions. We played very well at times in every game, but found more success in games against weaker competition."

The Eagles took on opponents at every level including NAIA, NCAA Divisions I, II and III, and WPSL franchises. "It was one of the most competitive spring schedules we've had as a program," Moodie said. "Moving forward, we need to believe in the ability of the team and compete at a demanding level. That is what next year's schedule will require."

Last year's team finished 6-7-4 and won 50 percent of its conference matches. "Improvements were made this spring," Moodie said.

Three particular players rose to the challenge this spring including two freshmen: Nora Logan (Charlotte, N.C.) and Elissa Lane (Knoxville, Tenn.).

Logan, a 5'11" striker, scored four goals this spring season. "Nora was able to play some big minutes for us," Moodie said.

Lane shined this spring as one of few natural defenders still on the team. "Elissa was by far the most improved player this spring," Moodie said. "She will be a fantastic asset for us next season."

Sophomore Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) also stood out this spring season. "Mikayla played very well," Moodie said, "in the middle of the park this spring, and was our playmaker."

The Lady Eagles will welcome 13 signees to the 2014-15 squad; additional commitments will be headlined in the near future.

The sidelines of McCown Field will greet a newly completed two-story field house this fall. C-N will host 11 matches in the 2014 regular season.

The future looks bright," Moodie said, "for Carson-Newman soccer."
