C-N women’s soccer takes on no. 1 seed Lenoir-Rhyne at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in first round of conference play

HICKORY, NC – Carson-Newman (6-6-4, 4-4-3 SAC) heads to Lenoir-Rhyne (13-3-1, 9-1-1 SAC) for the first round match of the SAC tournament tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.

 

The Eagles enter the tournament as the no. 8 seed while Lenoir-Rhyne sits in the no. 1 spot.

 

"Anyone can win in the tournament," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said. "We just have to prove that it can happen tomorrow."

 

Carson-Newman tied Anderson in its last game of regular season 1-1 after two overtimes Saturday. The Trojans took the lead in the 29th minute. After 64 minutes of action, senior Raquel Pimentel (New Port Richey, Fla.) put in her first goal of the year off a cross from freshman Nora Logan (Charlotte, NC) to tie it up.

 

In regular season, the Bears defeated Anderson 2-0 with goals from Emmi Dunn and Leah Mullins. L-R outshot Anderson 22 to nine.

 

The Bears ended their season on a high note with a 3-1 win over Queens. Hanna Kiebel opened the scoring in the ninth minute. By the 63rd minute, L-R had a 3-0 lead over the Royals who put in their lone goal in the 89th minute.

 

The Eagles defeated Queens 1-0 in regular season off a penalty kick taken by senior Danna Stringle (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) in the 34th minute. C-N outshot the Royals 19 to 12. Keeper and senior captain Tiarna McKenna (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) had eight saves on the match.

 

The Bears' lone conference loss was a 1-0 defeat at Catawba. Despite having been outshot 22 to five, the Eagles defeated the Indians 3-1 on Sept. 21 with two goals by junior captain Sidnee Edwards (Knoxville, Tenn.) and one by freshman Gabrielle Gianeselli (Knoxville, Tenn.).

 

L-R tied Wingate 0-0 after two overtimes on Sept. 22.

 

On Sept. 14, C-N fell 4-1 to Wingate. Senior Lizeth Munguia (Wilmington, NC) scored the Eagles' goal off a free kick taken by Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.).

 

"We played them a pretty close at home," Moodie said, "but now we have to go to their place."

 

The Bears toppled C-N 3-2 in regular season. Garcelle Alequine supplied the first to goals giving L-R a 2-0 lead by the 24th minute. Four minutes later, Munguia laid off a ball to Gregg at the top of the box for a one time finish.

 

Thirty minutes into the second half, Kendal Smith put one away giving L-R another two-goal lead. Five minutes later, Gianeselli scored to make it a 3-2 final score.

 

"It's going to be a very tough game," Moodie said. "We're going to have to work hard to get the result."
