CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Pfeiffer's Hanna Holmstrom finished off a pass from Alyssa Wombwell in the 104th minute to lift the Lady Falcons to a 2-1 victory in double overtime over the fifth-ranked Carson-Newman women's soccer team on Friday night in the Queens Soccer Class.
The contest was the season opener for both squads.
C-N outshot the Lady Falcons 10-4, including a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The teams battled through a scoreless first half and remained tied for a majority of the second half before Mariah Martinez tallied a goal in the 78th minute to give the Lady Falcons a 1-0 lead.
Lady Eagle junior forward Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) provided the equalizer in the 90th minute to knot the contest at one and sent it into overtime. Lizeth Munguia (Wilmington, N.C.) was credited with the assist.
The game remained tied until Holmstrom tallied the match-winner in double overtime.
Pfeiffer goalkeeper Jamie Alcala recorded four saves in the win.
The Lady Eagles return to action on Sunday against Queens (N.C.) in the Queens Soccer Classic. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
