WINGATE, N.C. — Junior forward Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) tallied two goals to carry the Carson-Newman women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Wingate on Saturday in Wingate, N.C.
The Lady Eagles have now won four straight matches and improve to 7-6 on the season and 4-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. Wingate falls to 7-2-3 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference.
Howell gave C-N a 1-nil lead at the half as she gathered a loose ball and fired a shot in the back of the net in the 34th minute.
The Lady Eagles put the game out of reach late in the second half. Howell finished off a lead pass from Maleya Garrison (Hendersonville, Tenn.) to give C-N a 2-0 advantage.
Wingate's lone goal came on a penalty kick by Kelly Moldenhauer in the 88th minute.
The Bulldogs held a 16-7 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
C-N goalkeeper Sarah Tompkins (Franklin, Wis.) had a stellar afternoon in goal with four saves.
The Lady Eagles return to the pitch on Wednesday in a SAC matchup at Brevard. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
