JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman women's soccer team was unable to overcome an early two-goal deficit as it fell to UNC Pembroke, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon at McCown Field.
With the loss, the Lady Eagles fall to 3-5 on the season, while UNC Pembroke improves to 7-1-1 with its fourth straight victory.
UNC Pembroke jumped out to a 2-nil lead early in the match, as Rebecca Womack tallied a goal in the 13th minute and Anna Svensson followed with a goal in the 15th minute.
But C-N answered with a goal in the 38th minute. Andrea Saevik (Froystadvaag, Norway) found Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) in the box, and Howell made a move and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the net to trim the Lady Braves' lead to 2-1.
The Lady Eagles were able to create some good looks in the second half, but the teams battled through a scoreless period, giving UNC Pembroke the win.
The Lady Braves held a 13-8 advantage in shots, while C-N had a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
UNC Pembroke goalkeeper Britney Bennett collected five saves in picking up the win.
C-N returns to the pitch on Saturday for a South Atlantic Conference matchup at Lenoir-Rhyne. Match time is set for 5 p.m. in Hickory, N.C.
