JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman women's soccer team overcame an early deficit to defeat Newberry, 4-2, on Senior Day on Saturday in South Atlantic Conference action at McCown Field.
With the victory, the Lady Eagles won a share of the SAC regular season crown, finishing the year at 11-6 overall and 8-1 in the conference. C-N has now won eight straight matches. Newberry falls to 4-12-1 on the season and 4-5 in SAC play.
C-N finished with a 14-9 advantage in shots, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal.
The Lady Eagles fell behind early, as Newberry's Christen Chestnutt (Debary, Fla.) tallied a goal in the 14th minute to give the Wolves a 1-nil lead.
C-N answered, however, with a goal from Andrea Saevik (Froystadvaag, Norway) in the 18th minute to knot things at 1-1.
Junior forward Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) then finished off a pass from senior Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater, Tenn.) in the 31st minute to put the Lady Eagles ahead 2-1.
But Newberry fired right back. Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.) knocked in a chip shot past C-N goalkeeper Sarah Tompkins (Franklin, Wis.) in the 36th minute to send the match into halftime tied at 2-2.
The second half was all C-N, as Howell scored her second goal of the night in the 49th minute and Gruenenfelder added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute to seal the win.
Tompkins collected three saves in picking up the win, while Newberry goalkeeper Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, Kan.) had four saves.
The Lady Eagles return to action on Tuesday when they host a first round match of the SAC tournament.
