Lady Eagles rally to hand LMU first loss of the season, 2-1

HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles scored two goals in a three minute span to open the second half and knock off previously unbeaten Lincoln Memorial University, 2-1, in South Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday afternoon in Harrogate, Tenn.

With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in SAC play, while LMU falls to 9-1 overall and 2-1 in the league.

Seniors Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater, Tenn.) and Melissa Morris (Sweetwater, Tenn.) each found the back of the net in the 49th and 52nd minute, respectively, as the Lady Eagles jumped ahead after trailing for almost the entire first half.

LMU took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when LMU's Leanne Reid's header off a Sarah Taylor cross found the back of the net to give the Splitters a 1-0 lead, one they would take into the half.

C-N would answer just four minutes into the second half as Morris scored for the first time this season, redirecting a header into goal off a C-N corner.

Gruenenfelder would put C-N ahead for good just minutes later. The All-American midfielder worked her way through the LMU defense to fire home a shot from 20 yards out as the Lady Eagles took the lead. It was her third goal of the season.

LMU outshot Carson-Newman 19-5, but C-N keeper Sarah Tompkins (Franklin, Wis.) had eight saves for the Lady Eagles.

Carson-Newman returns to action on Saturday against Catawba. Kickoff is at 5 p.m. at McCown Field.
