JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Sophomore Andrea Saevik (Froystadvaag, Norway) tallied a goal in the 87th minute to lift the Carson-Newman women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Catawba on Saturday night in South Atlantic Conference action at McCown Field.
Saevik broke loose in the box and lofted a shot just over the hands of Catawba goalkeeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, Mass.) for the match-winner.
With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Catawba falls to 5-4-2 on the season and 1-2-1 in SAC play.
C-N held a 12-4 advantage in shots, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal.
Catawba took a 1-nil lead into halftime after Erinn Wescoat (Egg Harbor, N.J.) finished off a pass from Juliana Conte (Hampton, Ontario, Canada) in the 11th minute.
The Lady Eagles answered in the second half, as senior Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater, Tenn.) scored the equalizer in the 73rd minute off a pass from Bianca Hall (Newcastle, England) before Saevik's game-winning goal.
C-N keeper Sarah Tompkins (Franklin, Wis.) finished the night with two saves to pick up the win, while Webster collected six saves for Catawba.
The Lady Eagles return to action on Wednesday at King College. Match time is set for 2 p.m. in Bristol, Tenn.
