Eagles Open Season With Doubleheader Against Young Harris and SEMO

Eagles Open Season With Doubleheader Against Young Harris and SEMO

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman Women's Tennis begins its season with two matches on February 8 at neutral sites.

The Lady Eagles' tennis squad begins its season in Harrogate, Tenn. on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University to take on both Young Harris and Southeast Missouri State.

The season begins against Young Harris as the Mountain Lions look to respond to a 6-1 thrashing in a road contest at North Georgia to begin the season on February 4. Young Harris was swept in doubles and earned its only win from the six-spot in singles, a match that the Mountain Lions' Callie Stanfield not only had to win in three sets but did so using a 10-8 tiebreaker in the third.

The Mountain Lions are coming off a 13-12 season in the 2024 campaign with a 5-4 mark in Conference Carolinas play. YHC made a run in the Conference Carolinas tournament making a run to the semifinals before falling to Erskine.

The Eagles get a test against Division I Southeast Missouri State. The Redhawks are 2-5 on the young season but are coming off a 5-2 win against Austin Peay.

Of substantial note, SEMO is led by first-year head coach Steve Brooks. Brooks is an alumnus of Carson-Newman and went undefeated in both doubles and singles play through all four seasons at C-N. The winningest player in program history with 200 victories, Brooks ranked as high as eighth nationally in NAIA in 1984.

SEMO went 12-7 last season with an undefeated 6-0 mark in the Ohio Valley Conference and were a win away from an NCAA Tournament bid but fell in the conference championship to two-seeded Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 4-1. SEMO was picked second in this season's OVC poll.

In Southeast Missouri tennis history, the Redhawks have faced 34 non-division 1 opponents. SEMO currently holds a 32-23 record against non-D1 opponents. Out of the past five seasons, the Redhawk tennis program has a 9-0 record against non-D1 opponents.

The Redhawks take on host Lincoln Memorial on February 7 at 4:00 p.m. and take on Cumberland University (Tenn.) on February 8 after their match with Carson-Newman to complete the trip to Harrogate.

The Redhawks have only faced off against Carson-Newman once, with Carson-Newman coming out on top to lead the series 1-0.

Carson-Newman looks to its two SAC Players to Watch, Edisa Hot and Leah McBride, to carry the Eagles through a rigorous season-opening doubleheader.
