Howard honored for a second time Tuesday, nets TSWA Pitcher of the Week accolade

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the second time in as many hours, Carson-Newman junior pitcher Sarah Howard (Georgetown, Ky.) has received recognition for her pitching efforts the previous week.

The Tennessee Sportswriters' Association has named Howard the Pitcher of the Week for the Volunteer State.

Howard joins Bre Lockett (Fontana, Calif.) as the Eagles' honorees from TSWA this season.

Howard worked 17.2 innings last week for C-N softball.  She collected three wins for the Eagles and struck out seven, allowing just one run along the way.

The highlight of Howard's action came Saturday against Catawba. Locked in a pitcher's duel with Caroline Turner of the Indians, Howard finished of an eight-inning shutout out for the Eagles.  She fanned seven in the contest and only allowed two singles.

Howard only saw one runner get to second in the game and only one ball left the infield (both of Catawba's base hits were infield singles).

She began her week working five innings of three-hit, one-run ball in Carson-Newman's 4-1 victory at Coker.  The run the Cobras scored was the only run that Howard allowed to cross for the weekend.

She came on in relief with the Eagles' down 4-0 to Brevard on Wednesday.  Carson-Newman's offense got in gear against the Tornados to rally 12-4 while Howard kept BC's offense at bay, allowing three hits over 4.2 innings.

Howard and the rest of the Eagles will be on display at The Vick Wednesday afternoon at 2 against USC Aiken. Coverage will be available on the Eagle Sports Network with a free high definition stream at cneagles.com/live.
