Kennedy leads Eagles during first round of Kiawah Island Invitational

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Carson-Newman men's golf team are in eighth-place after the first round of the Kiawah Island Invitational at Osprey Point Country Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.

Senior Nicklaus Kennedy (London, Ontario, Canada) led the Eagles with an even round of 72 and is tied for 13th after the first round.

"We didn't get much out of our round today. Middle of the pack against a really top field; we can certainly improve on this as we move forward," coach Randy Wylie said. "Nick Kennedy had a solid round; the rest of the guys struggled with too many three putts. On the other hand, it was a beautiful day at Kiawah Island, what a great place! God has blessed us."

Senior Andrew Hall (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished a stroke behind Kennedy with a one-over 73 and is tied for 19th. Freshman Jake Headrick (Maryville, Tenn.) made his collegiate debut and finished at two-over with a round of 74; he is tied for 27th.

Senior Jace Devault (Kingsport, Tenn.) made his Carson-Newman debut with a 77 at five-over and is tied for 53rd. Freshman Alex Hutson (Newport, Tenn.) finished tied for 73rd with a seven-over 79 in his debut in the Orange and Blue.

Host South Carolina Aiken leads by three strokes over Flagler; South Atlantic Conference counterpart Tusculum is third and it is five strokes back of the Pacers. Ethan Wagner of Flager leads the individual competition after carding a round of 67; he owns a one stroke lead over two other golfers.

The second and final round tees off Tuesday morning from the Palmetto State as the Eagles look to rise up the leaderboard.
