Darkness strikes at McDonough Cup with Eagles in 12th-place

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The 18th-ranked Carson-Newman men's golf team is in 12th-place at the McDonough Cup after the end of the second round was called due to darkness in the Sunshine State at Rio Pinar Country Club and lead four other nationally-ranked teams.

Each Eagle that is participating has finished 14 of the 18 second round holes when darkness struck; senior Jace Devault (Bluff City, Tenn.) leads C-N after an even-par 72 during the first round and he currently holds a round of three-under as the senior is through the sixth-hole. Devault is currently in a 13-way tie for seventh.

Carson-Newman was tied for 10th after the first round with a score of 288 and recorded two eagles in the early round to lead the tournament in that category. In the second round, the Eagles are one-over 226 with 19 combined holes yet to be played.

"We played mediocre today against a great field, which puts us in the middle of the pack. The kids are working hard; they just are not making enough birdies and we are missing too many fairways. We are all excited about having a strong showing in the final round," coach Randy Wylie said.

Devault opened his second round with a birdie on the par-three 11th, his second hole of the round; the senior then recorded three-consecutive birdies on the 17th, 18th and first holes to get to four-under through nine holes. Devault is ninth in the field while playing par-fives with a score of three-under and an average of 4.50 strokes.

Senior Andrew Hall (Knoxville, Tenn.) carded the low round for the Eagles during the first 18 holes. Hall shot a one-under 71, his ninth below-par round of the year, during the morning round and he recorded one of the team's two eagles. In his second round, the senior sits at two-over 62 with three holes left to play. Eight pars opened Hall's second round with a bogey and birdie following on his ninth and 10th holes. He is tied for 42nd with three holes left in the second round.

Senior Nicklaus Kennedy (London, Ontario, Canada) is tied with Hall for 42nd with a score of even-par 55 with four holes remaining in the second round. Kennedy shot a 73 during the early round with four birdies on his scorecard. Fourteen holes into the senior's second round, Kennedy has recorded 12 pars, a birdie and bogey.

Freshman Jake Headrick (Maryville, Tenn.) is shooting a two-over round of 57 with four holes remaining in Monday's second round. Headrick's first round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-five first hole; the freshman has two birdies during his second round of the day. Headrick is tied for 77th at four-over.

Junior Dalton Reese (Warrenton, Ga.) rounds out the Carson-Newman team with a tie for 88th with a score of five-over through 14 holes. Reese opened his first round with birdies in three of his first four holes and capped the round with a birdie on the par-five ninth. During the junior's second round, Reese has 10 pars.

Florida Southern was leading the tournament when the round was called at 15-under; the Moccasins were leading Flagler by three strokes. Rollins's Emil Sorebo leads the individual competition by seven strokes over Jimmy Jones of Florida Southern and Lincoln Memorial's Sam Broadhurst.

The Eagles conclude the fall season with the finish of the second round, which will be immediately followed by the final round of the McDonough Cup on Tuesday from Rio Pinar Country Club.
