Headrick leads Eagles on first day of South/Southeast Regional

NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional Results – Day One

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – Freshman Jake Headrick carded the 15th-ranked Carson-Newman men's golf team's lone even-par round on Monday morning during the first round of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf South/Southeast Regional at Mission Inn Golf Club & Resort.

Headrick (Maryville, Tenn.) shot a 72 for the Eagles round, while the next closest C-N player finished at three-over. He is currently tied for 19th on the individual leaderboard.

Carson-Newman is 12th in the team competition and is 24 strokes behind the leaders West Florida.

"Nice job today by Jake Headrick," coach Randy Wylie said. "As for the whole team, everyone is a bit disappointed. The Eagles are looking forward to a big bounce back day tomorrow."

Headrick birdied his second hole of the morning on the par-four 11th and then followed with an eagle on the par-five 14th. Headrick made the turn after going birdie-bogey-birdie and finished with a back-nine one-under 35. On the front nine, the freshman carded a birdie on his final hole of the morning on the par-four ninth to go with three bogeys.

Senior Andrew Hall (Knoxville, Tenn.) opened with a bogey on the par-five 10th but birdied two holes later. Hall followed suit with back-to-back bogeys on the 15th and 16th to finish the back nine at two-over. Hall tallied six pars after going bogey-birdie-bogey starting on the second hole. The Knoxville, Tenn. native is tied for 38th.

Senior Jace DeVault (Bluff City, Tenn.) tallied two birdies on the back nine and then added another on the front nine, but the senior also shot nine bogeys to finish the day at six-over 78. DeVault is tied for 70th.

Senior Nicklaus Kennedy (London, Ontario, Canada) opened his Regional Championship with a pair of pars and then bogeyed the par-three 12th. Kennedy followed with back-to-back birdies but then the senior went bogey-triple bogey. He made the turn after birdie-double bogey to shoot four-over. On the front nine, the Canadian counteracted a pair of birdies with three bogeys and a double-bogey. Kennedy finished the round seven-over 79 and is tied for 79th.

Junior Dalton Reese (Warrenton, Ga.) shot five-over on the back nine with a pair of double bogeys. On the front nine, Reese carded five bogeys to finish the round at 10-over 82. The junior is currently tied for 99th.

West Florida leads the South/Southeast Regional by two strokes over Lynn at eight-under. The two top-placed team from the Southeast, Limestone and Columbus State, are currently tied for third and are 11 strokes behind the leaders. Barry and Georgia Southwestern are tied for fifth at four-over.

West Florida's Chandler Blanchet and Lynn's Manuel Torres are tied for the regional lead at seven-under.

The Eagles tee off at 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday morning in the second round of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship's South/Southeast Regional Championships at Mission Inn Golf Club & Resort.
