Eagles set to chase national rankings at NCAA DII Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- Carson-Newman swim is set to compete at the 2023 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships this Wednesday, Mar. 8 through Saturday, Mar. 11.

Carson-Newman swim is sending six individual athletes to compete for national titles as well as a set of relay-only swimmers to race throughout the week. The championships will be held in the IU Natatorium at Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis. The national competition will last four days.

Manon Compagner, Hobson Stelling, and Rachel Peden will swim in day one of the championships.

Compagner and Stelling will both compete in the 50-yard freestyle prelims at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. Finals for the event will be held at 6:00 p.m. the same day. Compagner was invited to swim in the event based on her 22.78-second qualifying seed time. Stelling has entered  the men's side of competition for a 20.52-second performance.

Rachel Peden will compete in the women's 1,000-yard freestyle in tomorrow morning's session. Her seed time of 10:10.32 in the event afforded her the spot to compete.

On Thursday, Mar. 9, Manon Compagner will race in two preliminary events to mark her busiest day of national competition. Compagner will compete in the women's 100-yard butterfly prelims at 10:00 a.m. Compagner has the second-fastest seed time in the event in 52.92. After the 100-yard butterfly, Compagner will go on to compete in the 200-yard freestyle preliminary event because of her 1:49.11 performance earlier this season. Finals for both events will be held during the 6:00 p.m. session later that evening.

Peden will also race in day two of the NCAA DII Swimming and Diving Championships in the 400-yard individual medley prelims. Peden's 4:22.61 seed time is her second of four qualifying marks that earned her entry to the meet.

Hobson Stelling will compete in the men's 200-yard freestyle prelims with a 1:39.89 seed time in day two of the national meet.

Both Carson-Newman men's and women's swim teams will compete in the 400-yard medley relay event during the 6:00 p.m. session.

Day three of the DII Swimming and Diving Championships will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, Mar. 10. Peden will swim in the women's 500-yard freestyle. Kyla Blakemore will enter the picture for the Eagles on day three in the women's 100-yard backstroke prelims. Blakemore has a 54.90-second seed time in the event.

Asger Hartvig will take on his first race of the week as well. Hartvig has a 54.14-second seed time in the men's 100-yard breaststroke and will compete in the prelims for Carson-Newman.

Carson-Newman swim will also compete in both the men's and women's 200-yard freestyle relay during day three of the championships.

On Saturday, Mar. 11, Compagner will race in her last preliminary event of the meet. The women's 100-yard freestyle will take place on the final day of competition, and Compagner will compete based on her 49.47-second performance earlier this season. Stelling will also compete in the 100-yard freestyle with his 43.91-second seed time.

Blakemore will compete in her second event, the women's 200-yard backstroke prelims, because of her 1:59.66 seed time. Peden will race in the women's 1,650-yard freestyle to wrap up her last preliminary event of the meet.

Carson-Newman will end the busy week with the 400-yard freestyle relay events in the final session of the championships.
