Eight Eagles awarded Academic All-District honors

GREENWOOD, Ind.- College Sports Communicators honored eight Carson-Newman swimmers in the 2022-23 CSC Academic All-District Teams this Tuesday, Feb. 28.

On the women's side, Rachel Peden, Kyla Blakemore, Summer Osborne, and Anna Tudor each received CSC Swimming & Diving Academic All-District honors.

Rachel Peden is a senior for the Eagles majoring in psychology. Peden has a 4.0 GPA. Aside from her academic achievement, Peden will compete at the 2023 NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships beginning Wednesday, Mar. 8. Peden was selected for four separate events. Her 500-yard freestyle (4:54.54), 400-yard individual medley (4:22.61), 1,650-yard freestyle (17:06.28), and 1,000-yard freestyle (10:10.32) each afforded her a spot to compete in the national meet.

Kyla Blakemore is a junior swimmer for Carson-Newman. Blakemore is majoring in communications and has a 3.73 GPA. Blakemore will compete with Peden at the NCAA DII Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.  Blakemore will swim the 100-yard backstroke for her selected time of 54.90 as well as the 200-yard backstroke that she swam in 1:59.66 to qualify. Blakemore secured both selection times during the SAC Swimming Championships to win gold in the 100-yard backstroke and silver in the 200-yard backstroke events.

Summer Osborne is a senior for the Eagles who is majoring in mathematics. Osborne has a 3.82 GPA. Aside from academic accolades, Osborne has secured a pair of personal records on the season. Her fastest 50-yard freestyle was in 24.24 on Senior Day against Mars Hill. She continued her success with another personal best in the 50-yard backstroke (25.95) as the leadoff for one of the women's 200-yard medley relays.

Anna Tudor is junior for the Eagles. Tudor is majoring in exercise science at Carson-Newman and currently holds a 4.0 GPA. For her efforts, Tudor was named the SAC Women's Enhancement Group Elite 23 Winner at the SAC Championships on Saturday, Feb. 11. The Elite 23 is an award that honors the student-athlete who has the top cumulative grade-point average in each of the league's 23 team championship events.

For the men, Asger Hartvig, Jed Little, Logan Ridge McCay, and Benaiah McDowell were awarded 2022-23 CSC Academic All-District honors.

Asger Hartvig is a sophomore for the Eagles. Hartvig is majoring in mathematics and holds a 4.0 cumulative GPA. Hartvig is another Eagle selection for the 2023 NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. He will swim the men's 100-yard breaststroke and was selected for his 54.14-second swim at the South Atlantic Conference Swimming Championships.

Jed Little is a junior majoring in exercise science with a 3.79 GPA. Little contributed to the men's second-place finish at the SAC Swimming Championships with a ninth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:40.45) and sixth-place finish 1,650-yard freestyle (16:11.97). Little also secured a season best performance in the 1,000-yard freestyle at the meet in 9:44.48. His efforts earned him a tenth-place spot in the event.

Logan Ridge McCay is a sophomore, and he is currently majoring in business administration at Carson-Newman. McCay has a 3.77 GPA. McCay also contributed heavily to the men's second-place conference finish on Saturday, Feb. 11. He placed third in the 50-yard freestyle finals with a new personal record of 20.31. McCay recorded another personal best in the 100-yard freestyle (44.55) to lock in a fifth-place finish for the Eagles.

Benaiah McDowell is a junior for the Eagles majoring in finance. McDowell has a 3.86 GPA. McDowell had a first-place finish at the SAC Championships in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:07.47. The event marked a season best performance for the junior. McDowell also secured a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.37) and seventh-place finish in the 200-yard IM (1:52.58).

CSC Academic All-District Teams aim to honor outstanding academic and athletic achievement, and eight Carson-Newman swimmers have collected the distinction for their success in the 2022-23 swimming season.

Carson-Newman swim will be back in action to wrap up the season at the 2023 NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships beginning Wednesday, Mar. 8 in Indianapolis, Ind.
