Program records and All-American swims highlight the first full day of DII Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- Carson-Newman swim's Manon Compagner secures All-American status in day one of the 2023 NCAA DII Swimming and Diving Championships.

Manon Compagner placed fifth in the women's 50-yard freestyle, earning the title of All-American during the first day of national competition for the Eagles. Compagner swam the preliminary event in 22.87 before besting herself in the finals in 22.81. Her efforts added 14 points to the Eagles' score in the championships.

Carson-Newman men's swim broke the program record in the 800-yard freestyle relay to kick off the men's championships. Wander Sousa, Matthew George, Arthur Gluzman, and Hobson Stelling competed in the event and placed 10th with a finals time of 6:32.66. Matthew George helped set the previous record in 2020 as well. George competed in the event with Caleb Howell, Nikola Tadic, and Raphael Lima for a time of 6:35.40.

In the women's 200-yard medley relay, the Eagles placed 10th with a finals time of 1:42.38. Kyla Blakemore, Breanna Belcher, Lily Parr, and Kennadi King contributed to the finish, and the women added 14 points to the team score. The men contributed eight points to the team score with a 13th-place finish in the event.

At the end of night one, Carson-Newman men's swim is ranked 14th, while the women are 16th in Division II.

Looking forward, day two of the NCAA DII Swimming and Diving Championships will begin tomorrow, Mar. 9 at 10:00 a.m. Manon Compagner will race in heat three of the women's 100-yard butterfly prelims, the first event of the day. Compagner will also race in the sixth heat of the women's 200-yard freestyle prelims. Rachel Peden will compete in the fourth heat of the 400-yard IM.

For the men, Hobson Stelling will begin the day in heat two of the 200-yard freestyle event. Finals will be held at the following session beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Day two of the 2023 NCAA DII Swimming and Diving Championships will begin Thursday, Mar. 9 at 10:00 a.m. in the IU Natatorium at Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis. Results will be available HERE or on the meet mobile app. Stay up to date for final results on cnealges.com.
