JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (16-6, 13-5 SAC) aims to build off Wednesday's win as it welcomes in reeling Newberry (5-17, 4-13 SAC) for a conference contest Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
Carson-Newman finishes the week off at home looking to extend its four-game home winning streak after defeating Mars Hill 98-75 on Wednesday night. Mincey's team at home averages 91.7 points per contest while shooting 49 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range. All those numbers are well above the averages for the season. The Lady Eagles have won four consecutive games at home and are 9-1 this season. They have won 24 of their last 25 games inside Holt Fieldhouse.
Lindsey Taylor (Maryville, Tenn.) was exceptional last time out against the Lions. She went for a career-high 38 points, making career-high 17 of her 19 field goals. Taylor has scored 20 points or more on 29 different occasions for C-N and has gone for at least 30 points five times in her 110-game career. The graduate student continues to creep up the all-time scoring list, 167 points from Leah Jackson's 1,737 third place scoring mark.
Campbell Penland (Sevierville, Tenn.) is moving up the program's scoring ranks as well. The senior guard needs 10 points to pass Coreen Wells for 13th on the all-time scoring list. Penland needs 14 three-pointers to move past Ashley Tipton for third all-time in C-N history.
The Lady Eagles won the first meeting with the Wolves back on January 11th, 79-59 at Eleazer Arena. Taylor scored a game-high 28 points and helped C-N shoot 54 percent from the field in the road victory. It was C-N's most efficient road scoring effort since shooting 61 percent at Coker on February 26th, 2022.
C-N has won 15 straight contests versus Newberry with 11 of those victories coming by double digits. Mincey's teams have won ten straight home games against the Wolves and are 22-4 all-time.
The Lady Eagles rank top 15 nationally in six different categories. C-N's 19.8 assists per game is number one, while its 1.25 assist to turnover ratio is tenth best. Seven different players have led C-N at least once in assists.
The high-level passing has led to the seventh-best scoring offense getting 82.1 points per game and to shoot 45.7 percent from the field, ranking 11th nationally. Defensively, the Lady Eagles rank 12th nationally averaging 4.5 blocks per game and winning the turnover margin by five per game.
Newberry heads to Mossy Creek trying to end the longest active losing streak among Southeast region squads. The Wolves have lost ten consecutive games and have not won since prevailing in double overtime versus Lincoln Memorial back on December 14th.
During this skid, Johnette Walker's team has lost just two of those games by single digits but those have been in their last three games. The Wolves lost by eight at Catawba, in a game that they led at halftime. Exactly one week ago, the Wolves lost a 78-75 shootout with Limestone. It was a three-point loss in a game where they led by two points with 1:20 left.
The Wolves are 2-10 on the road this season and have lost five straight road affairs.
Jess Tomkins averages 15.1 points per game for an offense that scores a league-worst 53.8 points on average. Newberry ranks last in the SAC in assists per game, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, and steals per game.
