2024-25 Academic All-District Teams (PDF)
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn – For the third straight season, Carson-Newman women's basketball has multiple players on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Women's Basketball team.
This season, Carson-Newman places three players back on the list in Makayla Alvey, Campbell Penland and Tori Rutherford. All three players earn this academic honor for the second straight season as well.
The 2024-25 Academic All-District® Women's Basketball teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes men's basketball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Alvey earns his second career academic honor. The senior guard was a key component to C-N's 23-win campaign. In 32 games this season, Alvey scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds per game. Over her 112-game career with C-N, the Dandridge native finishes with 716 career points and 532 career rebounds.
Her career-high in scoring came against Anderson in the South Atlantic Conference tournament on March 6th, 2024. She made nine of her 19 shots to score 22 points. Alvey had four career double-doubles including two of them this season. She scored 18 points and grabbed ten rebounds in a road win over Tusculum on Feb 12. In the conference tournament against Anderson, Alvey snatched ten rebounds again and scored 16 points for another double-double.
Penland is an academic all-district team member for the third straight season. She lands this honor in her senior season after averaging 11.4 points per game and drilling a career-best 72 three-pointers to lead the South Atlantic Conference. Penland made a career-best 37.7 percent of her three-point shots and 39 percent of her shots from the field.
The Sevierville native scored her career-high on February 3rd, 2024, at #14 Catawba. Penland made a career-high 12 field goals and a career-high seven three-pointers to finish with a career-high 32 points. Throughout her Lady Eagle career, she made three or more triples in 31 games and scored in double-figures 67 times. Her 1,387 career points finish tied for ninth-most in program history, while her 235 career three-pointers are third all-time.
Rutherford earns her all-district honors for the second straight year after having a career-year in 2024-25. One of the most improved players in the conference, Rutherford upped her scoring average from six to 11 points per game this season and shot 46 percent from the field and 34 from long range.
The Rutledge native scored a career-high 22 points in a blowout win versus Wingate on January 18th this season, a game in which she also drilled a career-high five three-pointers. She scored in double-figures in 20 of her 31 games this season, including in the final ten games of the season. Rutherford turned in a second straight season in which she led the Lady Eagles in steals with 67.
