JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The fall section of the 2017 schedule for Coach Randy Wylie and the Carson-Newman men's golf team was announced on Thursday.
Coach Wylie and his club have four tournaments ahead of them including back-to-back trips to Georgia between outings in South Carolina and Florida.
The season begins for the reigning South Atlantic Conference champions with a trip to the Kiawah Island Invitational at Osprey Point Golf Club in Kiawah, S.C. from Sept. 9 to 12. The Eagles finished in 10th-place at the event in 2015.
"Some of the guys that will be going [to Kiawah] have played there before, and we've got a good gameplan already for that golf course," Wylie said. "We're really excited about going back there and playing, and it's going to be a really top-notch field … a really good way to start the year with some good competition."
Two weeks later, the schedule takes the team to Georgia for the first of its back-to-back outings in the Peach State for the Cougar Invitational, which is set for Sept. 24 through 26 at the Columbus Country Club. The following week, the team will take part in the North Georgia Fall Invitational at the Achasta Golf Club in Dahlonega, Ga. The team finished second there in 2015.
"We haven't been [to Columbus] in several years, since before I was the coach, and it's a premiere event, also. The golf course is fantastic – I've actually played it before," Wylie said. "We've just got a really good slate of courses that we're playing, some really challenging places."
The Eagles close out autumn with their fifth straight showing at the McDonough Cup at the Rio Pinar County Club in Orlando, Fla. After a 10th-place showing last season, Wylie looks for the team to make an improvement with a team that has grown and gained experience over the past year.
"Some of the best teams in the country are at [the McDonough Cup], but my guys are used to that now" Coach Wylie said. "Going to the NCAA Tournament, winning a conference championship, those are the kinds of experiences that allow the guys then to, when they play, see the best teams.
"They might be playing five teams ranked in the top-ten in that field, but they're used to playing in events like that. They'll handle it. I'm pretty confident."
