FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. – Due to darkness falling over the links at the Golf Club at Fleming Island, the second round of the 2018 Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate was suspended, halting No. 15 Carson-Newman at eighth-place on the leaderboard.
For the team, all five Eagle golfers had played through the entire back-nine in the second round but were not even halfway through the front-nine before the round was called due to darkness. As for individuals representing C-N, Grant Bodie (Knoxville, Tenn.) had finished the front half of the course with just one hole played on the back-nine. On the other hand, Will Hurt (Powell, Tenn.) had completed all but holes 1-4 in the second round.
In the first round, the Eagles were 12-over with a score of 296 to land in a tie for 10th-place with Wingate.
"We played poorly in the rain in our first round of the spring, but bounced back nicely in the second round," head coach Randy Wylie said. "I think we were just a little anxious and rusty to start the season."
Tom Forster (Oundle, England) was the highest-placed Eagle by the time the second round was suspended, sitting at a tie for 7th-place at one-under par on the day. He closed out the first round as the Eagle closest to par, shooting a +1 round of 72 through the first 18 holes.
Jake Headrick (Maryville, Tenn.) recorded six bogeys in the first round with two birdies, pushing him to a four-over round of 75 to start the day. In the second round, he shot -3 to move him to a tie at 19th.
Bodie had a strong showing through the front-nine in the first round shooting even on par, but a back-nine that saw him birdie just once with two bogeys and two double bogeys pushed him to +5 through the start of the tournament.
The second round had seen a turnaround from the junior before suspension was called, shooting for birdie on four holes with even pars on the other six holes he played. His improvement boosted him to also sit at the tie for 19th on the leaderboard.
Fellow individual Hurt finished the first 18 holes of the day with a four-over score of 75 after shooting +2 on the front and back-nine. He sat at a tie for 27th-place at the conclusion of the first day, shooting two bogeys, two birdies and an eagle with just four holes left to play in the second round.
Jackson Tyler (Wilmington, N.C.) was only able to notch one birdie in the first round as he bogeyed on four holes and shot for a double bogey on the 10th-hole to record a +5 round of 76 through the opening 18 holes of play.
With seven holes remaining for his second round outing, the freshman sat at a tie for 35th after shooting two-under par for the round, moving him to three-over for the event.
Alex Hutson (Newport, Tenn.) had the second-best score on the team through the first 18 holes, shooting two-over in the first round. At the conclusion of day one, he also landed at a tie for 35th. A birdie, double bogey along with even par on the eight other holes he completed pushed him to +3 for the event thus far.
Anthony Marcinelli (Knoxville, Tenn.) had the toughest morning for C-N, shooting three-over on hole 4 with a double bogey on hole 13. He shot for bogey on five occasions, birdied twice and had the team's lone eagle in the first round on the hole 5 to give him a +6 round of 77 to start Monday. His eagle shot was also one of just four in the entire first round.
Through 12 holes of the second round, the junior shot under par on just one hole with two bogeys and a double bogey that knocked him to a tie for 70th on the leaderboard at + 9 overall.
At the stoppage point, No. 20 Lander was the top overall team with a team total of 475, six-under par for the event. Close behind in a tie for second were No. 17 Coker and Young Harris, both shooting -2.
Lander's James Bartlett and host team Lincoln Memorial's Dan Bradbury sat at the top of the leaderboard once time was called on the day, both shooting four-under par.
The second round will resume tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. before a single round of 18 holes will close out the Intercollegiate at the Golf Club at Fleming Island. Live stats of the final day will be available through BirdieFire.
