Newberry slips past Eagles, 5-4

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman men's tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision to Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference action on Monday at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.

The Eagles lost two of three doubles matches and split the singles matches to fall to 4-13 on the season and 1-7 in the conference.

Sophomore Paul Birdsong (Woodstock, Ga.) and senior Adriano Kira (Brazil) recorded C-N's lone point in doubles play, as they squeezed past Newberry's Michael Saunders and Mohammed Chakir, 9-8 (7), at No. 2 doubles.

Sophomore Derek Holdway (Woodstock, Ga.), Kira and Birdsong then won at No. 3, 4 and 5 singles, respectively, but it wasn't enough, as the Wolves claimed the No. 1, 2 and 6 singles matches to seal the win.
