Cummins paces Eagles after Day One of UIndy Invitational

CARMEL, In. – The Carson-Newman women's golf team had a solid two rounds in the first day of the UIndy Invitational.

36 holes were played on Day one of the UIndy Invitational.

"After starting the tournament with a canceled practice round, the girls started the day unsure on certain shots," Head coach Kelsey Hutson said. "Once we finished the first round, the girls got into the routine of the course. I was really proud of the girls determination."

Maeve Cummins and Caroline Nemes each shot a 4-over 76 in the first round. Cummins was relatively consistent in her first round. The graduate student recorded ten pars, six bogeys, and two birdies. Nemes overcame a slow start, going 5-over, over the first six holes, but finished strong going 1-under over her final 12 holes. The sophomore birdied the par 5 18th and then the par 3 third in the first round.

Graduate student Hannah Holland, junior Ana Herrera and senior Ellie Haughton each shot 80 in the first round. Holland finished 1-under in her final five holes. Herrera's best stretch of round one came on holes 10-15, when she recorded five pars and one birdie. Haughton's best stretch also came on those set of holes as she went 1-over through holes 10-15.

C-N was tied for eighth after round one. The Eagles were only seven strokes off of 4th

Improving was the theme for C-N in round two as, the Eagles went on to shave eleven shots off of their round one team score.

Cummins picked up where she left off in round one firing in a 1-over 73. She recorded two birdies and three bogeys as part of her round. The birdies came on holes 2 and 5. Overall, she is tied for 15th entering the final round.

"Maeve had a great comeback round, 73," Hutson said. "She continues to lead our team strongly."

Nemes fired in another 4-over 76 in the second round. She made two more birdies on holes 8 and 12. She is tied for 24th entering the final round.

Holland started strong, going 2-over on her first 12 holes, and finished strong with a birdie on her final hole of the day.

Haughton improved her score by two strokes with a second round of 6-over 78. Similar to many of the other C-N golfers, she finished strong parring her final five holes.

"Ellie, Hannah, Ana and Caroline made great shots on the course all day to help our team score," Hutson said.

Playing as an individual, freshman Madison Cline fired an 8-over 80 in round one and a 7-over 79 in round two. She ranks 6th among the other individuals competing in the invitational.

"Madison had a great two rounds for her first college tournament," Hutson said. "Especially because she has never seen this golf course before."

C-N enters the final round only 15 strokes off of 4th place.
