Eagles head back to Palmetto State for SAC Championships

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Looking to win its second ever conference championship, Carson-Newman heads down to Anderson, South Carolina to compete at the South Atlantic Women's Golf Championships, tomorrow through Tuesday.

Carson-Newman is coming off its best finish at the championships a season ago. The Eagles finished in third place, the highest finish since 2016, when they finished second. C-N carded a nine-under 297 final round score in the final round of the event, the lowest single round score for the program in SAC Tournament history. Carson-Newman's 909 team score last season was the lowest three-round score for the orange and blue in tournament history.

C-N will compete at Cobbs Glen Country Club in Anderson, South Carolina. Cobbs Glen will play just shy of 6,000 yards and is a par 72. Both the front nine and back nine, feature five par 4s, and 2 par 5s and 3s.

The Eagles have finished well as of late at the championships and have experience returning there this season. C-N has finished inside the top five, each of the last four seasons and has four of its five golfers competing at the championships for at least a second time.

Graduate Student Maeve Cummins (Waringston, Northern Ireland) is C-N's most experienced player, as she gets set for her 4th conference championship. The only SAC championship Cummins will not compete in was the 2020 SAC Championships which were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021, Cummins put together a remarkable tournament, going 5-over par and finishing in fourth place. The 3-time all-conference member leads C-N this season with a 76.0 scoring average in 23 rounds this season and has a scored a low round of 72, on three different occasions.

Fellow graduate student Hannah Holland (Sale Creek, Tenn.) is set to compete in her third conference championship. Holland is coming off a top five finish at last season's championships, going 9-over par for the week. She is fresh off her best performance of the season, finishing in a tie for fourth place at the Surratt Memorial Invitational where she went 12-over par for the three rounds.

Like Holland, Ellie Haughton (Lincolnshire, England) will tee it up at the SAC Championships for the third time in her C-N career. Last season, Haughton finished tied for 16th at the championships. She recorded back-to-back top 20 finishes to end the season, giving her three for the year. Her best tournament came this spring, at the Battle at Hilton Head, where the senior went 2-over par and finished in a tie for third place.

After finishing just outside the top 30 in last year's SAC Championships, Caroline Nemes (Orlando, Fla.) is slated to compete at the championships for a second consecutive season. Nemes is coming off her a career performance at the Surratt Memorial. The sophomore finished 10-over par, her best three round score and in third place, her highest finish since joining C-N last fall. In 20 rounds this season, Nemes has a 78.0 scoring average.

Ida Peterson (Copenhagen, Denmark) is the only C-N golfer that will not previously have participated in the SAC Championships. The freshman burst onto the scene to begin the spring, recording back-to-back top ten finishes at the Battle at Hilton Head and Low Tide Intercollegiate. Th final round of 1-under 71 was Peterson's best round this year. In ten rounds played, she has a 76.9 scoring average.
