C-N vs Wingate Highlights

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – No. 19 Carson-Newman (3-1-3, 1-0-2) and Wingate (2-2-3) played a hard-fought, physical and defensive match Saturday night at McCown field, that eventually led to a scoreless draw.

The draw was both teams third of the year and second in SAC action.

Both teams had their fair share of opportunities to score. C-N's first chance came in the 9th minute when senior Jannik Schulte sent a shot wide of goal. In the 17th and 20th minutes, C-N had two corner kicks but were unable to come up with any shots as the Bulldogs had defended it well.

Wingate's first chances came dangerously. The first shot was by Mattis Westburg that forced C-N goalkeeper Darin De Meza to make the save. Then, just over a minute later, Mattia Ditommaso hit the left post and the ball ricocheted off to the side where the Eagles could clear it.

Lyons' crew had another excellent chance in the 40th minute, when a free kick was headed by senior Eric Schmutzer to fellow senior Ewan Lynch who had this header saved by Wingate keeper Aleksa Janjic.

Wingate came out firing to begin the second half. Within the first two minutes of the second half, Ditommaso fired a rocket from the top of the box that was saved by De Meza diving to his left. Less than twenty seconds later, Pedro Santos fired a shot off the right post and out of play. The Bulldogs had only two more shots in the second half and both were off target in the 56th and 58th minutes.

C-N's first shot of the second half came in the 73rd minute, as senior Ben King fired a rocket just wide left, from more than 20 yards outside the box.

The Eagles made one last push to try and score the go-ahead goal. Senior Nic Carsh fired two shots, one that forced Janjic to save. Those attempts came in the 80th and 83rd minutes. The final opportunity was off the foot of senior Mattheus Maia. He launched a shot off a free kick from just outside the box that was once again saved by Janjic.

The two teams combined for 32 fouls and seven yellow cards, but neither had a player sent off.

Both goalkeepers recorded three saves in the match. C-N was outshot by Wingate 10-8.

Both teams each gained a point with the tie.

C-N is back in action on Wednesday at Emory & Henry. The match is slated for 7:00 p.m start.
