Five Eagles named to Academic All-District Team

GREENVILLE, Ind. - Carson-Newman men's soccer had five players recognized on the 2022 Academic All-District teams, as selected on by College Sports Communicators, and announced earlier today.

All five of C-N's selections were seniors. Niels Buurman, Ben King, Eric Schmutzer, Jannik Schulte and Tim Vercelli being the five selections.

Buurman was one of two Eagles to play in all 17 games. He made 12 starts, including the final five games of the season. He scored two goals and added three assists for seven total points. He scored the equalizer to help C-N tie Lee on Sept 3. Buurman assisted on C-N's go-ahead goal against #14 Mars Hill on Sept 28. His other two assists came in back-to-back games against Lincoln Memorial (Oct 12) and Catawba (Oct 15). The senior sported a 4.0 GPA.

King played in 68 career games, making 60 starts. His 60 starts rank ninth all-time in program history. Over the course of 68 games, he played in a total of 5,281 minutes which ranks 4th in program history. The Hertfordshire, England native excelled in the classroom with a 4.0 GPA.

Schmutzer started and played in 16 games for the Eagles this season. He scored four goals and recorded one assist. The four goals were scored in different games and came when C-N was either trailing or tied with its opponent. He maintained a 4.0 GPA.

Schulte appeared in 14 games, making 13 starts. He scored two goals and added one assist. He scored C-N's first goal of the season on a penalty kick in the season opening win over West Alabama on Aug 25. Schulte's other goal came in a 3-2 win over Emory & Henry on Sept 21. His one assist came in the second game of the season against Spring Hill. 

Vercelli made 13 appearances, with 11 starts. Tied for the team lead with four goals scored, while adding two assists. He scored a goal in three consecutive games from Sept 24 to Sept 30. Nine of his 15 shots were on target. Vercelli maintained a 4.0 GPA.

The All-District award winners are recognized by CoSIDA as the nation's top student athletes for their combined performances on the playing field and in the classroom. Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. First, second and third team honorees will be announced in early December.
