JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – In its final home regular season game of the season, No. 17 Carson-Newman (7-3-5) fell to Auburn Montgomery (6-5-3) on Tuesday afternoon at McCown field, 2-1.

The loss was C-N's first loss in non-conference play and the second consecutive loss at home this season.

Eagles' senior goalkeeper Darrin de Meza made an early save off an Adam Hanson shot in the 9th minute.

Auburn Montgomery struck first in the 38th minute. Off a corner kick, Aristarch Oluwatuyi found space in the box and headed a shot into the back of the net to get the Warhawks ahead 1-0.

C-N fired six shots in the first half, none of which were on target.

The Eagles first shot of the second half was on target, and they made it count. In the 48th minute, sophomore Daniel McIlroy fired a ball into the box, off a free kick, and senior Eric Schmutzer surged forward to head the ball into the bottom left corner to tie the match at 1. The goal is Schmutzer's fourth this season, he has now scored in back-to-back games. Both goals helped C-N tie the match.

AUM recorded the next five shots, only one on target that De Meza saved. In the 69th minute, senior Niels Buurman sent a shot on target, but AUM goalkeeper Alexander Kraus made the save.

Two minutes later, AUM capitalized off another corner kick. Logan Roach's corner kick sailed to the back post where Phillip Spicknbaum headed it in the bottom corner to give the Warhawks the lead back in the 71st minute.

"We talked about it and worked on it in training," Carson-Newman head coach Stephen Lyons said. "We simply just need to do better on set pieces. The second goal was almost a carbon copy of the first one and we didn't learn. Against good teams, they are going to punish you for mistakes. Disappointed to not get something out of the game."

C-N had chances to answer. Freshman Issac Pascal, and senior Harry Whitehead fired shots on target forcing Kraus saves.

Senior Willem Kruijk gave the Eagles chances late, but his shot attempts in the 86th and 88th minutes were saved by Kraus.

With 93 seconds remaining, AUM's Nikoloz Monaselidze was shown a red card. The Eagles only managed one shot in that time, unable to take advantage of the player advantage.

Whitehead led the team with six shots, none were on goal though. C-N outshot AUM 18-14.

De Meza recorded five saves in the match.

The Eagles get a week off, before finishing the regular season against Tusculum on October 26.
