C-N Match Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman men's soccer (7-2-5) steps out of South Atlantic Conference play as it welcomes Auburn Montgomery (5-5-3) to Mossy Creek tomorrow afternoon for a 1 p.m. match.

The midweek match will be the first meeting between Carson-Newman and Auburn Montgomery.

The Eagles are coming off a comeback victory over Catawba on Saturday. Stephen Lyons' team played the final 26 minutes of the match down a player, and still managed to score two goals to earn the 2-1 victory.

Seniors Eric Schmutzer and Yannick Kranz scored the goals for C-N in the second half. Schmutzer headed home the equalizer in the 71st minute off a sensational cross from Niels Burrman. Kranz scored his goal on a penalty kick, as C-N drew a foul in the box in the 88th minute of action. The goal was the latest the Eagles have scored this season.

C-N has now won four matches this season, when conceding the first goal. The Eagles had only won five times, when conceding the opening goal, in the first five seasons under Lyons.

The Eagles meet a Gulf South Conference team for the fourth time this season. They opened the season with wins over West Alabama and Spring Hill at home and then began September with a 2-2 draw with Lee.

It's the second straight season the Eagles have played an October non-conference match. The Eagles defeated Shaw last October 2-0.

Auburn Montgomery enters the non-conference match also coming off a comeback victory last time out. The Warhawks overcame an early goal and scored three consecutive goals to take down Shorter on senior day.

Like the Eagles, Auburn Montgomery has faced Spring Hill, West Alabama and Lee all in conference play. The Warhawks also have faced SAC opponent Wingate. AUM went 2-1-1 in those four common opponents with C-N. While the Eagles went 2-0-2.

AUM has played better on the road than at home this season. The Warhawks are 2-1-2 on the road this season. This is the second and last time the Warhawks will play a road non-conference match.

The Warhawks rank seventh in the GSC in goals scored (20) and shots per match (11.7). Five different players have scored multiple goals this season.

AUM also ranks seventh in goals allowed in the GSC. Goalkeeper Alexander Kraus has made 25 saves and has appeared in all 13 matches this season.

C-N is 4-1-2 at home and 2-0 against non-conference teams at McCown field this season
