Three second half goals lift Eagles past Wasps

 Box Score

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- No. 25 Carson-Newman (4-1-3, 2-0-2) scored three goals in the second half to secure a road victory over Emory & Henry (0-7, 0-4), winning 3-2.

C-N extends its unbeaten streak to five games with the victory. The win puts the Eagles third in the SAC table with eight points.

"A win is a win, but by our standards we all know we need to be better, Carson-Newman men's soccer coach Stephen Lyons said. "Too many sloppy decisions and turnovers. Then, in the final third, we simply have to be more efficient. The lads know this and we look to improve going into Saturday's game."

The Eagles had early chances to strike first. In the 12th minute, sophomore Daniel McIlroy, seeing his first action of the season, fired a through ball but C-N was offside negating what was a goal scored.

C-N had several other quality first half opportunities. Seniors Yannick Kranz, Ewan Lynch, Quinten Carels, and Willem Kruijk combined for eight shots from the 17th minute to the 28th minutes. The best opportunity coming when Lynch hit the cross bar in the 22nd minute.

The Wasps first chance came in the 39th minute by Malolan Veeravalli who had his shot blocked.

The final opportunity came in the closing seconds of the first half when senior Eric Schmutzer sent a shot on target, but the save was made by Spencer Scott.

The Wasps scored first on crafty dribbling from Veeravalli, who fired a shot into the upper left corner of goal to put Emory & Henry ahead 1-0.

C-N responded in the 62nd minute, as Lynch took advantage of a ball deflected in the box to level the match at 1.

The Eagles had two chances following Lynch's goal. Senior Niels Buurman sent a powerful shot wide right and senior Jannik Schulte fired a shot from the top of the box that was saved by Scott on a dive.

C-N would go onto score two goals in 63 seconds. The go-ahead goal came off C-N's 11th corner kick of the match. The Wasps couldn't clear the ball and Schmutzer made them pay to put C-N ahead 2-1. Schulte scored shortly after, which proved to be a crucial one for the Eagles.

As C-N was possessing the ball in the defensive half, a pass by Schmutzer got away from C-N freshman goalkeeper Eric Thust and trickled into the back of the net to make it 3-2 with five minutes remaining.

The Eagles held on late to take the match. C-N outshot E & M 21-5 and 8-1 on goal.

Three different Eagles scored the three goals. Schmutzer and Schulte got their second of the year, while Lynch scored his first.

Senior Willem Kruijk led the team with four shots.

The Eagles set season highs for shots (21) and corner kicks (13) and tied its season high for shots on goal with 8.
