First place teams battle when Eagles meet Indians Saturday afternoon

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – No. 11 Carson-Newman (6-2-5, 4-1-4) travels to Salisbury, North Carolina for a 1 p.m. matchup with Catawba (8-3-1, 5-2-1) on Saturday.

The two teams are tied atop the South Atlantic Conference table. C-N has played one more conference game that Catawba. The Eagles are 4-1-4 for 16 points, and the Indians are 5-2-1 for 16 points.

Carson-Newman is coming off its first loss in conference action this season, a 2-1 loss at home to Lincoln Memorial. All three goals in the match were scored in the first half.

With another assist on Wednesday, senior Willem Kruijk now has six this season ranking second in the SAC.

Seniors Nic Carsh and Tim Vercelli are tied for the team lead with four goals scored each. Senior Harry Whitehead has scored three goals in five games played this season.

Senior goalkeeper Darrin De Meza is tied for second in the SAC, only allowing 11 goals this season. De Meza has recorded 15 saves in the last two matches. He is averaging more than five saves per game over his last five starts.

Last season in October, C-N was unbeaten in road matches, outscoring its opponents 8-1 in the three matches.

The Eagles enter tomorrow afternoon's match 2-0-2 on the road in conference play this year.

Catawba is coming off a comeback win over Limestone on Wednesday. The Indians trailed 3-2 in the second half but scored goals in the 59th and 73rd minutes to take down the Saints. Their other four wins in conference play are against Mars Hill, Wingate, Emory & Henry, and Newberry.

Sebastia Cerda-Tous and Bautista Vecchi-Ramello lead the second-best offense in the SAC. Cerda-Tous is tied for 4th in the SAC with six goals scored this season. Vecchi-Ramello is tied for 3rd in the league with five assists. Two others have multiple goals scored this season. 11 different Indians have assisted on a goal this season.

Goalkeeper Zac Stiffler is 2nd in the SAC with a .796 save percentage. He also ranks top five in goals against average and saves.

Carson-Newman has won four straight meetings against Catawba, outscoring the Indians 8-2. The Eagles last loss on the road in this series was back in 2013.
