Eagles battle ranked Lions Wednesday night in Mossy Creek

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- Carson-Newman (4-1-4, 2-0-3) welcomes No.14th ranked Mars Hill (5-1-2, 2-0-1) to Mossy Creek for a midweek conference matchup.

C-N's only loss of the season came to a ranked team (No.11 Young Harris). In that match, the Eagles played the final 48 minutes of the match with a man down.

The Eagles are coming off a 1-1 tie against Coker on Saturday. Senior Tim Vercelli scored a goal in the 32nd minute, but Coker's Tony Barry scored the equalizer ten minutes later. Neither team scored in the second half.

The draw helped maintain what has been a solid September for the Eagles in which they have not lost a match. C-N currently has an unbeaten streak in the month of September at 11 games dating back to last season.

A balanced offensive attack has been the key for C-N in 2022.Ten different Eagles have combined to score the team's 15 goals this season. Five of those ten are tied for the team lead with two goals scored.

Six different Eagles have assisted on a goal, with seniors Nic Carsh and Willem Kruijk leading the way with two each.

Goalkeeper Darin De Meza tied his season and career high for saves in a match with five last time out. He has 21 saves this season and two clean sheets.

No. 14 Mars Hill (5-1-2, 2-0-1) entered the United Soccer Coaches Poll for the first time this season. The Lions are also ranked 1st in the Southeast region.

The Lions are playing their best soccer right now. They went 2-0 last week, defeating Tusculum and Lenoir-Rhyne each 1-0.

They have also held their opponents off the scoreboard in three straight matches. The current scoreless streak ranges four games and 349:42 minutes.

Mars Hill has the number one attacker in the South Atlantic Conference in forward Peter Plougmand. The sophomore has a league high in goals (7), points (15), shots (30) and shots on goal (18). He has won SAC offensive player of the week twice this season. 

Senior goalkeeper Brennan Whalen is the reigning SAC defensive player of the week, his first honor of the season. Whalen is tied for 3rd in the SAC for saves with 31. He ranks second in save percentage (.838), goals allowed (6) and third in goals against average (0.75).

The Eagles lead the all-time series 8-3-4, including four straight in the series.

The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. from McCown field.
