Women’s tennis in top 8 of preseason poll

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman women's tennis landed in 8th place of the 2014 SAC preseason poll released Thursday afternoon.

"We are looking forward to the season," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said, "and certainly have our sights set higher than our preseason ranking."

The Eagles roped in 46 points to secure 8th place. Mars Hill, Coker, Brevard and Lenoir-Rhyne follow with 41, 29, 28 and 20 points respectively.

Wingate holds the top spot with 116 points with Tusculum trailing closely behind with 107.

"During the last two seasons," Love said, "injuries have hampered both the women and men and did not allow us to put our best six players on the court consistently."

Anderson, Newberry, Queens, Lincoln Memorial and Catawba round out the middle of the pack with 98, 81, 79, 78 and 69 points respectively.

"We are going into this season healthy," Love said, "and if we play well, we can achieve better results than last year."

The Eagles' season begins Feb. 8 at Tennessee Wesleyan at 1 p.m. C-N's home season begins at 2 p.m. Feb. 12 against Alabama Hunstville.
