Lady Eagles host Flames in home opener

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (3-2) women's tennis team meets up with Lee University (1-0) for its first home match of spring season tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.

"This is going to be a good chance for us to rebound from our last match," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said. "We are very excited for our first home match."

The Lady Eagles dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker at Young Harris last Sunday.

"We were disappointed with the loss at Young Harris," Coach Love said. "We're looking to clean up some little details that would have made the difference."

Stefy Stand (Ecuador), Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) and Katie Brown (Douglasville, Ga.) each contributed a point in singles play.

The team of Guerreiro and Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) brought in the fourth point at no. 3 doubles.

The match came down to a third set at no. 5 singles between Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) and Victoria Herndon. Sanderson fell 5-7, 7-6, 6-3.

"It was just a matter of a few points here and there," Coach Love said. "We are really excited to be playing again."

The Flames torched Christian Brothers University 9-0 in their season opener. Their match against Georgetown College scheduled for last Friday was cancelled.

C-N last faced Lee on Feb. 18, 2012. The Flames swept the Lady Eagles 9-0.

"I expect Lee will be a pretty good team," Coach Love said, "and will hopefully help us get prepared for our conference match later this week."

The contest starts at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.
