Brown claims 11th straight win, Eagles topple Brevard 6-3

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (9-7, 2-3 SAC) women's tennis team burned Brevard (3-7, 0-4) 6-3 Friday afternoon at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.

Katie Brown (Douglasville, Ga.) dominated Jule Hermann 6-1, 6-0 at no. 5 singles for her 11th consecutive victory.

"We played some strong singles," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said, "down the lineup. Breanne started us off with a good win at number three singles. Brooke, Katie and Haleigh came through for us and all had straight set victories."

At no. 3 singles, freshman Breanne Tremblay (Canada) stole a 6-4, 6-1 contest from Nirvanna Silva. Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) beat Claudia Hellman 6-3, 6-0 in the no. 4 spot while Haleigh Chastain (Knoxville, Tenn.) secured a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Ana Drummond in the no. 6 position.

"I just felt like we had to have one of the top three singles matches to give us a chance," Coach Love said. "Patricia and Stefy were still battling at one and two singles, but it was going to be difficult for them. Breanne's match gave us a lift."

Senior Stefy Stand (Ecuador) battled hard at no. 2 singles but ultimately dropped a three-setter to Michelle Prata 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

"We started strong," Coach Love said, "by winning two out of the three doubles matches."

In doubles play, the team of Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) and Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) swept Hellman and Silva 8-0 at no. 2. Sanderson/Brown provided a point at no. 3 doubles with an 8-1 win over Hermann and Drummond.

"This was a good win for the women," Coach Love said. "It came at a good time for us as we head into a stretch of four conference matches in the next week."

The Eagles continue conference play at Queens March 30 at 1 p.m.
