Eagles fly away with 7-2 victory over NGU

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (6-4) women's tennis team buried North Greenville (2-11) 7-2 Saturday afternoon at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.

"It was a solid performance overall," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said. "We started strong by taking two of the three doubles matches."

Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) toppled Ann Hayden Huxford and Haley Hardwick 8-0 at no. 3 doubles. In the no. 2 doubles spot, Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) and Katie Brown (Douglasville, Ga.) stole a 9-8 contest from Rebecca Beacham and Aline Rubeiro after a one point tiebreaker.

"Jen and Patricia are playing some really good doubles right now," Coach Love said. "Brooke and Katie got a 7-4 lead and then managed to win the pro set in a tiebreak."

At no. 1 doubles, Stefy Stand (Ecuador) and Breanne Tremblay (Canada) fell just shy of a win with a 9-7 decision in favor of Maggie Elliott and Susane Lenz. "Stefy and Breanne were down 5- before waking up and playing some nice doubles," Coach Love said, "It was just too little too late."

Guerreiro contributed the first singles point with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 final over Lenz. "We were lead in singles by Patricia," Coach Love said, "who won a tough three set match at number one."

The Eagles went on to win four more points in singles play. "Other singles winners were Stefy, Brooke, Katie and Haleigh," Coach Love said. "It was just a really good day for us."

Brown swept Hardwick 6-0, 6-0 at no. 5 singles. Stand defeated Ribeiro 6-2, 6-1 at no. 2 singles. In the no. 4 spot, Sanderson beat Beacham 6-4, 6-1, and Haleigh Chastain (Knoxville, Tenn.) collected a 6-2, 6-3 contest from Huxford.
