Lady Eagles continue win streak with 7-2 victory over Converse

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman (7-4) women's tennis team trounced Converse (2-8) 7-2 earlier today for its third consecutive win at home.

"This was the third match in as many days for the women," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said. "Today was a physical challenge."

The duo of Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) and Jennifer Ott (Knoxville) defeated Klaire Rouse and Tanashia Thomas 8-3 at no. 3 doubles to advance to a four match winning streak. At no. 2 doubles, Katie Brown (Douglasville, Ga.) and Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) beat Samantha Sheffield and Kelsey Rembert 8-4 for their third consecutive win as a team.

"We took two out of the three doubles matches to start strong," Coach Love said. "Brooke/Katie and Jen/Patricia played solid doubles today and got us off to a good start."

In singles play, Stefy Stand (Ecuador) dominated Claudia Gunn 6-4, 6-3 in the no. 2 spot. Breanne Tremblay (Canada) secured a 6-1, 6-0 win over Rembert at no. 3 singles, and Sanderson seized a 6-1, 6-1 decision from Sheffield at no. 4. Haleigh Chastain (Knoxville, Tenn.) bet Rouse 6-3, 6-0 in the no. 6 position.

Sanderson, Stand and Chastain are all now on a three match winning streak in singles play.

"We took five of the six singles matches," Coach Love said, "to secure the team victory."

At no. 5 singles, Brown conquered Thomas 6-0, 6-0. She has won her past six singles matches, and has swept her last four singles opponents.

Brown has not given up a point since the Eagles' 8-1 loss to Newberry on Feb. 22 in which she claimed C-N's lone point with a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the no. 6 position.

"We were a little flat," Coach Love said, "physically and emotionally, but we still managed to do what was needed to win the match."
