C-N suffers heartbreaker on home turf

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (4-4) women's tennis team fell 5-4 to the University of the Cumberlands (1-2) Friday afternoon.

"We competed well in singles," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said. "We just let them get the momentum coming out of doubles and we just could not recover."

The doubles team of Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) swept Lyndsay Collette and Kaitlin Daughtery 8-0 at no. 3 doubles to send the Eagles into singles play trailing by one.

"Jen and Patricia continue to play solid doubles," Coach Love said. "Another slow start in doubles did not help our cause today."

In singles play, Katie Brown (Douglasville, Ga.) deflated L. Collette in the no. 5 position; Brown is now on a three match win streak.

At no. 6 singles, Haleigh Chastain took down Kaylyn Collette with a 6-2, 6-2 decision. Breanne Tremblay (Canada) claimed the Eagles' fourth point with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Chanel Williams in the no. 2 spot.

"In singles," Coach Love said, "Breanne, Katie and Haleigh came through with good wins. Patricia, Brooke and Jennifer battled but just could not pull out their matches."

Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) fell just shy of a win with a 6-4, 7-5 final in favor of Sydni Grimes at no. 3 singles. At no. 1 doubles, the team of Tremblay and Stefy Stand (Ecuador) dropped an 8-6 decision to Neesha Thirumalaichelvam.

The Lady Eagles host Bluefield State Sunday at 1 p.m at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.
