JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (10-13) women's tennis team stormed through King University (8-14) to win its final match of the season 8-1.
"The women came out and swept the doubles," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said. "It just took all the momentum away from our opponent."
Senior Stefy Stand (Ecuador) and Haleigh Chastain (Knoxville, Tenn.) teamed up at no. 1 doubles to take down Katya Cerny and Alyssa Salazar 8-2. At no. 2 doubles, Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) and Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) toppled Mariana Hosomi and Naomi Reyes 8-1. The duo of Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) and Katie Brown (Douglasville, Ga.) defeated Claudia Morris and Haley Maloney 8-4 in the no. 3 spot.
The Eagles put on a good show in singles play. Guerreiro took a 6-1, 6-0 decision from Cerny in the no. 1 position. At no. 2, Stand claimed a 6-1, 6-3 point from Reyes. Chastain battled Maloney at no. 6 for a 7-5, 6-2 win.
Brown secured a 6-3, 6-0 contest against Morris at no. 5 singles. Brown ended the regular season on a 16 match winning streak.
Sanderson was in the lead at no. 4 singles before Salazar retired the match.
Hosomi provided King's lone point at no. 3 singles by defeating Ott 6-1, 6-1.
"Our seniors Stefy and Katie went out on winning notes today," Coach Love said. They won both singles and doubles."
