Lady Eagles play host to Patriots

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (4-3) women's tennis team goes head-to-head with the University of the Cumberlands (0-2) tomorrow at 2 p.m.

"We are looking forward to getting back out on the court," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said, "and bouncing back from a tough loss to Newberry in our last outing. Hopefully the weather will cooperate with us."

The Eagles are coming off an 8-1 loss at Newberry. Katie Brown (Douglasville, Ga.) brought home the lone point for C-N with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at no. 6 singles.

Last Friday, the Patriots fell 5-4 to C-N conference foe Lincoln Memorial. The Cumberlands claimed wins in the top three singles spots.

The team of Neesha Thirumalaichelvam and Erin Hart contributed the Patriots' only point in doubles play in the no. 2 position.

The University of the Cumberlands defeated the C-N 7-2 last season. The pair of Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) and since graduated Megan Wilson gave the Eagles one point after doubles play. The team defeated Hart and Trinity Goodman 8-3 at no. 2.

Sanderson provided C-N's second point at no. 3 singles after taking Shelby Muff to a third-set tiebreaker. The contest concluded 6-1, 2-6, 10-8.

"The women need to come out strong against University of the Cumberlands," Coach Love said. "They came out tentative against Newberry and it set the wrong tone for the match."

The match will begin tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.
