INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Carson-Newman men's golf team has earned the top spot in the first NCAA Southeast Regional poll announced on Friday, Feb.11.
It is the first time the men's golf team has been ranked in the NCAA South Regional since Apr. 19, 2019, when the team finished the 2018-19 season ranked second in the region. That season, Tom Forster finished tied for 23rd at eight-over after shooting his best round to end the regional. Forster was the only Eagle to shoot under par in a round for the tournament.
Teams that win their respective conference championship with receive automatic bids into each regional tournament. For each regional, the top-12 teams will play along with six individuals who are not on the teams included. From there, the top three teams and individuals in each regional tournament will garner a spot in the national championship.
The Carson-Newman men's golf team last played in the South Regional in 2019, appearing as the third seed and finishing the season as the number eight seed.
In their last South Regional appearance, C-N was five shots shy of snagging a spot in the finals heading into the day after landing in a tie for 11th in the second round. The comeback bid ended three shots out of the seventh-place qualifying position with a 12-over day.
This is the best placement the Eagles have seen in the regional since a sixth-place finish in 2008. They went 40-over for the event with a 904 total.
Five SAC teams are posted in the initial rankings as the Eagles are joined by Lincoln Memorial checking in at No. 3, Newberry is No. 7, followed by Limestone at No. 8, and Tusculum earned the No. 9 spot.
The Eagles are currently ranked No. 8 nationally according to the Bushnell/Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll. LMU is No. 4 nationally and Limestone is No. 10.
The rankings are the official poll utilized by the NCAA in the championship selection process and will continue to be released each week by the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Committee up to the NCAA Championship selections.
