VALDOSTA, Ga. - The second round of regional play for the no. 4/4 Carson-Newman men's golf team was a struggle, as the Eagles slid down two more spots to 14th overall.
C-N shot a two-over 290 on the second day of play from the Kinderlou Golf Club. The team shot four-over on the front-nine, led by Jackson Tyler shooting a one-under 35 on the first nine holes. On the back-nine, the convocation shot two-under, with Jonathan Nielsen recovering from a five-over front-nine to card a three-under 33 to close out the day.
The orange & blue have found success on par threes this weekend, shooting three-under and an average score of 2.93 on the shortest holes in the peach state. The convocations 32 birdies are the third-most of the field.
Tyler paces the Eagles, sitting tied for 27th. The Wilmington, N.C. native shot a one-under 71 for the second straight day, sitting with a 142, two-under score after the opening rounds. The senior carded five birdies, including three on the back-nine to finish one-under on the day.
On par threes, Tyler has excelled, shooting three-under with an average score of 2.63. His eight total birdies are tied for ninth most in the field.
Jake Mynatt is sits tied for 53rdnafter shooting an even-par 72 in the second round. He has a two-round, one-over 145 score after his first two rounds of play. Mynatt recorded four birdies, but a pair of bogeys on the second and sixth holes, along with a double bogey on the 14th hole moved him down back to even-par.
Mynatt has shot two-under with an average score of 2.75 on par threes so far this week. Mynatt and Nielsen have carded seven birdies this week.
Nielsen is down 11 spots after the first round, sitting tied for 65th after shooting a two-over 74 today. The sophomore has carded a three-over, 147 score so far this week. After shooting five-over on the front-nine, the sophomore recorded three birdies on the back-nine, including two straight on the eleventh and twelfth holes.
Will Collins is up ten spots to a tie for 74th after shooting a one-over 73 in the second round. Collins has a four-over 148 score in the regional tournament so far. The Knoxville native carded back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth holes, before shooting back-to-back bogeys on the eleventh and twelfth holes. His 24 pars are tied for eighth most of the field this week
Alex Hodge fell 58 sports to a tie for 93rd after carding a seven-over, 79 in the second round. For the week, Hodge has carded a six-over 150 in the regional tournament.
Due to thunderstorms in the area, play has been suspended until 7 a.m. Saturday morning. Barry currently sits in first place at 17-under on the team side, while Clay Tucker of Florida Southern and AJ Ewart of Barry sit tied for first individually at seven-under.
Carson-Newman will close out the NCAA South/Southeast Regional tomorrow, May 7, beginning at 7:30 AM. The Eagles will need to make the top seven to move on to the NCAA National Championship. Fans can follow along with live results via Golfstat here.
